I love you, trackstar by Stinkus – Aipate

Stinkus, real name Tyler Thompson, hails from Los Angeles. This moniker was the natural evolution of his nickname ‘Tink’, suggesting that the artist’s personality does seep into his music. Before debuting this solo project, Tyler previously worked with the likes of Smallpools, girlhouse and Khatumu as producer/songwriter. Stinkus is clearly all about him, at least when it comes to this album.

I love you, trackstar spans a range of emotions. And, there is a persistent feeling of honesty throughout. This is encapsulated by the title track, which also forms the album’s centrepiece. “I love you, trackstar” is totally mesmerizing, with pensive ruminations characterizing the heartfelt lyrics.

The opening track “Plastic Blue” reveals Stinkus’ intention to go all out with the production, with a similar energy felt in the second track, “Falling In Love”. This song ushers listeners into a euphoric state.

The transition to the third track, “only when it comes to you, i guess”, is such a gloomy affair. With hip hop beats forming its bedrock, this song feels gripping.

“Curiously Intent (underdog)” is an emotionally resonant song. Right before it though, “Casino” captivates strongly thanks to its driving melodies. A softer and more upbeat tone sums up the interlude track, “Still”.

By the time you are in the second portion of this album, the decision to repeat becomes a foregone conclusion. You just have to surrender to the feeling.

I love you, trackstar is Stinkus at his best. It is an album that exalts honesty over perfection and this is expressed through the lyrics. The artist’s bold production choices are like an assertion that ‘no script followed here’.
