The process of immigration can be really daunting, and that was exactly the case for Singaporean-born Los Angeles-based indie-rock artist Claire Ghost (professionally known as Paper Citizen). She did have her fair share of challenges and even picked a moniker (‘paper citizen’) that reflects these struggles.
In her newest single “Defuse”, the singer-songwriter delves into the frustrations involved. The song’s moving lyrics and haunting melodies speak directly to the listener’s heart.
“‘Defuse’ is a song born from the heartache and resilience of living through the immigration journey,” the artist explains. “It carries the weight of fear, the spark of hope, and the ache of longing for a place to belong. The name “Paper Citizen” itself unravels a piece of that struggle, transforming uncertainty and frustration into something tender, human, and defiantly alive.“
I have been a fan of Paper Citizen for at least three years now but every new song from her leaves me speechless. With “Defuse”, she goes another level.
