On Lessons Learnt EP, Abbey Lane Reflects on Personal Growth: A Review – Aipate

On her sophomore EP Lessons Learnt, up-and-coming Australian artist Abbey Lane continues her use of honesty and introspection as tools for self-discovery. This collection of songs feels just as personal as her debut project (that EP titled Afterthoughts was released last year).

Lessons Learnt is an impressively cohesive body of work featuring a smooth blend of indie-pop and indie-rock. It tells the story of personal growth from the perspective of a young woman who is figuring out life one lesson at a time.

The title track opens the EP on a reflective yet empowering note, combining pop rock guitars with warm synthpop textures. And, while “Bigger Man”, the second track, is a vibrant and soaring anthem about turning one’s experiences into affirmations of growth, the piece that follows it, “Baby Steps”, is softer and more tender. “Baby Steps” is quite emotionally uplifting.

“Again & Again” continues the theme of growth, albeit with much more vigour, with the track’s soaring chorus making for a singalong. Things slow down once again on the moody “Burning Out”, before the energy peaks in the closing track, “Younger”. This final track is groovier, offering us a celebration of Abbey’s journey of self-growth.

With Lessons Learnt, Abbey Lane serves up another cohesive and emotionally resonant EP. But that’s not all: the project is so captivating musically too. As an artist, this Sydney-based newcomer is improving by leaps and bounds, and it’s only a matter of time before she gets millions of fans listening. Follow Abbey Lane on Instagram.
