The Origins of “To Belong”
Many will remember To Belong (Graduation song). Written for his high school graduation by the Choral Department chair David Lauria, it’s originally composed for that track. But it’s become so much more over time. The song was released in 2018 and also launched in an uplifting message to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting victims. This gave the song a meaning beginning and its popularity grew from there. It’s found new life as an anthem for graduates throughout the nation, ringing in the halls of scores of schools throughout graduation period. Imagine all those caps flying in the air as it plays. It has this universal feel whenever you listen to it which makes anybody that has been by way of a graduation ceremony feel like they belong. It depicts the mixed thoughts of that day, with lyrics about hope, connection and also the anticipation of the long term. It’s the type of song that makes you happy with your journey and optimistic for what is to come.
