Lonely Boy by Joveth – Aipate
For a couple of years, a sense of isolation shadowed much of Joveth’s life. Born in the Philippines and raised in Sweden, the singer-songwriter and producer had taken a leap of faith and moved to the US, alone. A 20-year-old in a foreign country during a pandemic, he had all the odds stacked against him.
Settling in the Southern Californian city of Santa Barbara, his pursuit of his musical dreams was everything but smooth, just as expected. But, while one can anticipate a problem that they are likely to face, nothing can prepare them for the actual pain of going through it. Joveth captures it all on his debut EP, Lonely Boy, which is out now via Voracious Records.
A project characterized by songwriting and production brilliance, the EP delves into the artist’s struggle to overcome heartbreak, addiction, and past trauma, and the desire to steer his life in the right direction. Introspection, thus, forms the foundation of Lonely Boy. However, musically, the songs are quite vibrant, with “Bubblegum”, a pop-rock-leaning track, being the most euphoric.
Throughout the EP, Joveth infuses electronic, dance and R&B elements into his alt-pop sound. From the distorted synths on “Burn It” to the broody soulful melodies on “We’re Over”, listeners get to appreciate his genre-bending approach to production. Lonely Boy consists of closely connected emotional stories wrapped in vibrant soundscapes.
With its message of self-discovery, “Say My Name”, which was the first ever single released by Joveth, did set the tone for the EP. Money Can’t Buy Happiness” closes things positively, with Joveth sounding more grounded and focused on his path of personal growth.
